Garden School 2008 courses

GARDEN MAINTENANCE
6 evening classes week held weekly
Designed for maintenance personnel engaged in the horticultural and garden industry and those who wish to increase their skills. The course includes the differing underlying soil types within Christchurch; planting and care of trees and other plants; pruning; pests, diseases and weed control; lawn construction and maintenance; general landscape management; employees including health and safety; customer relations; public responsibilities.
Starts – 6.30pm – 8.30pm Wednesday 27 February through to 2 April. Supportive notes provided.

COURTYARDS AND PATIOS
Half Day
Get creative in courtyards and other small spaces. As sections get smaller and houses bigger the space left for gardens is getting less but there is still an opportunity to have a wonderful garden. Designing for scale, the use of materials and plant selection becomes part of this course.

GARDEN LANDSCAPE DESIGN
4 evening classes held weekly
The course covers the basics of landscape design. Planning your garden to suit your lifestyle, considering aspects of the location and its suitability for various garden styles, creating features, drawing designs to scale and implementation. This course is suitable for people who have an understanding of basic garden skills.
Starts - 7pm - 9pm Tuesday 29 July to 19 August.

BEAUTIFUL BOUQUETS
Half-day course
Come along and learn the techniques of creating a bouquet. The tutor will demonstrate how to design and make simple imaginative and contemporary bouquets. Students will make a bouquet to take home. All flowers and wrappings provided. Suitable for all levels of abilities.

PRUNING
Public pruning demonstration of climbers, trees and shrubs
Date - 9.30am - 11.30am Saturday 9 August.
Location - Mona Vale Gardens Fendalton Road
Open to the general public Free

FLORAL DESIGN
4 afternoon classes held weekly.
This course will encourage enthusiasm and success. Whether a beginner or with some experience participants will learn new techniques and get lots of ideas. Classes will be informal with an emphasis is on learning in a relaxed atmosphere. Some materials supplied
Starts – 1pm - 3pm Wednesday 13 August to 3 September

POTS WITH PIZZAZZ
Half-day course
Demonstration and workshop. Learn the ‘know how’ of creating successful pots and hanging baskets. This will cover choice of containers, potting mix, plants including vegetables, maintenance, feeding and pruning. Also how and when to repot. Participants will plant a pot to take home.
9.30am – 12.00 noon Saturday 16 August.

LANDSCAPING YOUR LIFESTYLE BLOCK
Lincoln Area
6 evening classes held weekly
The course covers the basics of landscape design. Planning your garden to suit your lifestyle, considering aspects of the location and its suitability for various garden styles, creating features, drawing designs to scale and implementation. This course is suitable for people who have an understanding of basic gardening.
7pm - 9pm Thursday 28 August – 2 October

FLORAL DESIGN - SIMPLE AND STYLISH
Half-day course
Innovative ideas for designing in stylish glass ware and other modern containers. How to design simple imaginative and contemporary styles using the latest techniques. Students will make a design to take home. Suitable for all levels and abilities.
9.30am - 12 noon Saturday 30 August
Tutor – Erin Brown Cost - $50
All flowers and equipment provided.

EDIBLE GARDEN
4 morning classes held weekly
The course will take place in a potager garden that is set in an attractive environment surrounded by an organic orchard. You will learn through hands on involvement a variety of skill. Subjects include the living soil, working a compost heap, planning an edible garden, diverse plantings of fruit and vegetables, grafting, pest and disease management, growing in small spaces etc. Materials and morning tea provided
9am - 11am Saturday. Third term date to be confirmed. Cost $70
Location an organic garden to be advised

GROWING FRUIT & VEGETABLES IN A LIMITED SPACE
This half–day course will be held in a private garden. See what is possible to grow in a limited space and how to mix beauty with edibles. Use fences and structures as extra space to grow fruit, and also how to use containers for fruit, vegetables and herbs. 9.30am - 11.30 am
Saturday 11 or 18 October depending on weather.

FLORAL DESIGN - CHRISTMAS CENTREPIECE
Half-day course
Be inspired to create a festive centrepiece. The tutor will demonstrate many exciting and modern ideas. Students will make their own design to take home. Suitable for all levels and abilities.

COOKING CHRISTMAS TREATS
Afternoon course
Simple and practical ideas for easy entertaining. Demonstration with recipes and tastings.
