It is an exciting time for the discipline of Landscape Architecture in Christchurch. Pre-existing principles of sustainability and resilience have taken on a new meaning in Canterbury where an awareness of natural hazards has increased significantly.  With this in mind, many landscape architects in Christchurch have already undertaken new and exciting challenges as they are ...

  • Greening the Rubble

Greening the Rubble is a uniquely optimistic community response to a natural tragedy. This Christchurch project began in November 2010 after demolition spaces suddenly became available in the urban streets, such as the corner of Victoria and Salisbury Streets. This park was built in Jan-Feb 2011, disappeared into central city Red Zone inaccessibility after 22 ...

Loving Winter

Posted in: News, This Month in the Garden, Winter Gardening|May 14, 2012

Winter is a great season – it just gets bad press!  Winter rains replenish the water table, winter frosts kill the residual pests, and the frosts bring those brilliant crisp still sunny days.  And winter snow on the mountains gives us a picture-postcard-perfect environment, and the snow entices the skiers from Australia for our tourist …

Garden Tips & Tasks for May

May is a time of falling leaves and for a general garden tidy up.
Your leaves should be used as mulch or compost.
NEVER fill your green bin with them!

Consider the influence the weather has on your property.
-- Get a clean-up spray on your trees.
-- Give deciduous fruit trees a lime sulphur spray after leaf fall.
-- Use Conqueror Oil to deal to spider mite in the over wintering stage.
-- Don’t forget to check your soil condition and if necessary use a good garden lime.
-- Move your cold sensitive potted plants into a more sheltered position away from the frosts.

Although there is an unmistakable chill in the air it heralds the start of a busy season of planning and planting.

-- Sow broad beans.
-- Transplant seedlings of broccoli, cauliflower and cabbage.
-- Plant silver beet for late spring harvest

About the Society

The Canterbury Horticultural Society began with the colonisation of Canterbury in the 1850’s. It was originally called the Christchurch Agricultural, Botanical and Horticultural Society.

In 1861 the group split and the Horticultural arm became the Christchurch Horticultural Society. This changed its name in 1898 to become the Canterbury Horticultural Society, which today is the largest horticultural club for home gardeners in New Zealand.

Our Membership

The Society's membership extends throughout New Zealand and overseas and its comprehensive programme includes garden and native garden awards, a National Garden Register of open gardens to visit, education courses, touring programmes including walking groups and providing advice to gardeners. The Society also has a number of specialist circles, over fifty Garden Clubs and many affiliated groups. The Canterbury Horticultural Society Incorporated is a registered charity in New Zealand.
